The moisture sensor is a simple analog sensor which connects to the 3V and GND pins on the Analog Zero and the output of the sensor is connected to A0. The main sensor we are using is a simple soil moisture sensor from Velleman. Yes you can buy the chip on its own for only a few dollars / pounds, but the Analog Zero board is a convenient form factor that offers a “less wires” alternative.
